When I think about Easter, chocolate bunnies, baskets and colorful, plastic eggs always pop into my mind. I’ve yet to see the plastic eggs here in Italy, but eggs in general are definitely not lacking.
Instead of baskets filled with a variety of small candy and toys, kids in Italy receive an extra large chocolate egg. And usually the chocolate eggs come with a little treat or toy inside.
When you go to a supermarket at Easter time, you can expect to find an aisle decorated with a variety of chocolate eggs. Some will be wrapped in cartoon characters for the younger kids, while others are seasonally wrapped and can be given to anyone.
In specialty shops, you can usually find fancier wrapped or decorated eggs.
I’ve never had an Italian style Easter egg, so I treated myself to one. I opted for a dark chocolate egg with a hot pink wrapper. I felt like a kid again after I left the store because I couldn’t wait to get home to unwrap the egg.
I tore open the wrapper to find an extra large chocolate egg.
I gave it a good knock on the table, and it split right open. I found that it was hollow inside, which for some reason I didn’t quite expect it to be.
The prize inside was a necklace. Not that I will ever wear it, but it was fun to crack open the egg and find it. Working on eating the chocolate has, however, been the most fun part.
Have you had a Italian-style chocolate Easter egg? What was the prize you found inside?
